Project introduced by CERAN Paris

Introduction

Intercultural one day training for an employee of a major French company coming to work in the UK; he is coming with his wife.

Background

The employer is a major French company with activities worldwide.

The employee comes from a technical background has previous expatriate experience. It is his and his wife’s first visit to the UK. They had been in the UK for a week.

Training

The intercultural training was in the London office of the employer, over one full day from 9 am to 5.30 pm and in French.

The objectives were:

  • Introduce British values;
  • Explore communication in the United Kingdom;
  • How to navigate professional and social life and administrative tasks.

We started the day with a brief conversation in English by way of assessing the learner’s confidence in English, leading to an intercultural audit to confirm the information from his pre-training questionnaire.

The training was a mix of presentation with slides and interactive games, role playing, quizzes. Additionally, videos were shown with interactive debrief. The purpose of the activities is to get the learners to practice and through doing to gain a better understanding.

We also touched on other European cultures that were of interest to the learner.

Conclusion

The learner had a good awareness of the British culture in relation to his own French culture and felt at ease with it.
